While smoking cigarettes is on the decline, the CDC estimated that nearly 38 million American adults smoked cigarettes everyday in 2016, and kills 480,000 Americans every year. Smoking causes significant health problems and the average smoker in the U.S. spends $1,500 to $3,300 a year.
Nugget Market, with 1,907 employees, works to encourage all company smokers to quit at the start of each year. As an incentive, the employees are awarded a $1,000 cash prize after their first six months without smoking. To keep the prizes, the employees must remain smoke-free through the end of the year.
